Description

Leedes Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to around 1500, with significant extensions added in the late 16th century and 17th century at either end. It features a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan and stands two storeys tall. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with plaintiled roofs. There is an axial early 17th-century chimney made of red brick with a sawtooth shaft, as well as another axial chimney from the 19th century located in the rear wing.

The windows are small-pane casements from the early 20th century, with those on the ground floor featuring transoms. The entrance door, also from the early 20th century, is half-glazed and panelled, positioned at the cross-entry. At the centre of the house is a two-bay open hall that retains some original features, including an arch-braced cambered tie-beam at the open truss and an octagonal four-way solid braced crownpost, along with close-studding. There is one blocked hall window with square mullions and an altered four-centred arched doorway leading to a service room.

A high-quality parlour wing was added to the right around 1600, showcasing fine close-studding, unmoulded joists, ovolo-mullioned windows, and a rear staircase wing. The service wing was rebuilt in the 17th century in a cross-wing form, featuring on-edge floor joists and a two-tier clasped-purlin roof with wind-bracing. The open hall was reroofed, and an upper floor was inserted. Decorative motifs such as fleur-de-lys and roses can be found in the ceilings of the hall, parlour, and one chamber from the early 17th century.
