Description

Old Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, said to be from 1602 but possibly around 1630. It underwent remodelling in the 18th century and has a rear extension from around 1970. The building is two storeys with attics and has a half H plan, featuring a centre range with an unusually narrow single window. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with plaintiled roofs, and both cross-wings have hipped roofs, which may be an 18th-century alteration.

At the rear of the right-hand wing, there is an original red brick chimney with three detached square shafts, while the left-hand wing has a matching chimney with a rebuilt shaft. A notable original dormer window on the rear roof slope has ovolo-moulded mullions. The late 18th-century casements include transoms and hinged boarded external shutters at the ground level. The central entrance doorway, added around 1970, is designed in the mid-18th-century style, featuring a six-panelled door with an architrave and pediment.

Inside, the narrow centre range contains a fine early 17th-century dogleg staircase with carved and pierced newel finials and widely spaced turned balusters. An ovolo-moulded mullioned and transomed window provides light to the staircase. The parlour features moulded plaster cornices, and a pair of fitted oak cupboards flanking the window creates a bay. The chamber above mirrors this arrangement, with cupboards set in wainscotting. In the kitchen wing to the right, there is a large segmental-arched fireplace and cable-pattern plaster on the ceiling beams, along with slender close-studding. The house also boasts many minor items of joinery and ironmongery that enhance its character.
