Description
Old Hall Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 16th century, with significant remodelling occurring in the late 16th century. It has one storey and attics, featuring a two-cell lobby-entrance plan, although it was originally constructed as a three-cell open hall house; the original parlour cell on the right was demolished in the 18th or 19th century. The cottage is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a hipped thatched roof that includes 20th-century eyebrow casement dormers. There is a red brick axial chimney and mid-20th-century small-pane casements, along with a bay window. The entrance door is a 20th-century addition located at the lobby-entry position. Inside, there is a two-bay open hall with twin service rooms to the left. The roof is smoke-blackened with coupled rafters, and the collars were replaced by clasped purlins shortly after construction. The service cell features unchamfered joists, and the studding is arch wind-braced. During the late 16th century, the hall's open truss was removed, a chimney was built in the cross-passage, and an upper floor with chamfered joists was added to the hall. Diamond-mullioned windows were also introduced during this phase. There is a small extension on the right that dates from the 19th or 20th century.
