Description
The Old Rectory is a former rectory that dates back to around 1500, originally built as one cross-wing of an open-hall house. It underwent significant remodelling in the early 19th century after the hall range was removed. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring early 19th-century herringbone pargetting in large panels. It has plaintiled roofs with axial and external chimneys made of red brick and stands two storeys tall.
The windows are early 19th-century small-pane casements with transomes; some include intersecting glazing bars in a Gothic style, while others have border panes. There are also some original external louvred shutters. The entrance door, also from the early 19th century, is panelled with the upper half glazed and features a moulded architrave and cornice. A lean-to verandah, which is slated and dates from the 19th or 20th century, is attached to the building.
The core of the house from the 16th century is likely a service wing of a larger residence, showcasing three bays of heavy framing that includes some close-studding and unchamfered joists, although much of it is concealed. The roof has a plain crownpost design with posts supported by 4-centred plank braces. To the right, there is a hipped wing that likely has a core from the 17th or 18th century but was almost entirely rebuilt in the early 19th century, with further remodelling occurring in the mid-19th century. Additionally, there is a 19th-century bakehouse connected to the main house, which is located on the site of the former hall range and features flint rubble walling while reusing primarily medieval timber components.
