Description
Nos 26 and 27 Lower Road are a pair of cottages that were originally built in the mid-16th century as one house. They were later remodeled and divided into separate cottages in the late 18th or 19th century. The buildings are two storeys high and feature a timber-framed structure that is plastered. They have a thatched roof with a rebuilt axial chimney made of red brick from the 19th or 20th century. Each cottage has a 20th-century small-pane casement window and a boarded entrance door from the 19th century.
At No. 26, there is heavy timber-framing from the 16th century, including studwork with reversed arch wind-bracing. There is evidence of shuttered diamond-mullioned windows, as well as signs of truncation at the left-hand end and repositioned tie-beams. The two central bays of No. 26 likely formed a hall with massive first-floor framing, into which a chimney was inserted in the 17th or 18th century. No. 27 has not been examined in detail.
