Description
17 and 19 Mill Street are a pair of cottages that may date back to the 16th century but were refronted around 1800. They are constructed from local stone rubble and feature a plain clay tile roof with a simple gable on the west side, along with brick chimney stacks. The cottages are two storeys high, with No 17 having two bays and No 19 having one bay.
No 17 has two-light small pane casements on the upper floor, and on the lower floor, there is a 12-pane sash window in the first bay, which is set under a timber lintel. The second bay features a six-panel door that is accessed by two steps, with glazed toplights above, all under a pedimented timber hood supported by iron brackets.
No 19 has a horizontal bar two-light casement above, and below it is an angled bay window with small pane casements topped by a lead-covered hipped roof. To the right, there is a 20th-century door that is accessed by four steps and is set under an exposed timber lintel.
Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported that the dividing wall between the two cottages includes a jointed cruck, with traces of a wall plate supported by the back of the cruck blade and a curved angle brace connecting the plate to the cruck upright. This indicates that the front wall serves as an outer casing to a timber frame.
