Description
A pair of cottages, likely dating from the late 18th century, located on the south side of Mill Street in Wincanton. They are constructed of local stone rubble, with No. 25 colourwashed. The roofs are mansard style, covered with plain clay tiles over base courses of stone slate, featuring plain gables and brick end chimney stacks. Each cottage has one bay. The ground floor of each bay has a small, one-story angled bay window with eight-pane sashes to each face, and lead flat roofs. The entrances are located to the left of each bay, featuring voussoired segmental arched openings. No. 25 has a four-panel door with glazed sections, while No. 27 has a six-panel flush door. Above the bay windows are two-light casement windows with small panes. The interior remains unseen. No. 27 functioned as the “Hit and Miss Inn” around 1830, as documented in Sweetman G's History of Wincanton (c1904).
