Description

Reedhouse Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1500, with alterations made in the late 16th century, 19th century, and mid-20th century. It is a three-cell open hall house, consisting of one storey and attics. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof that features three mid-20th century eyebrow casement dormers. A late 16th or 17th century axial chimney made of red brick has a mid-20th century rebuilt shaft, and there is a 19th century gable chimney on the left side.

The entrance features mid-20th century casements and a half-glazed panelled door set within a gabled porch supported by posts. Inside, there is a two-bay central open hall with an open truss that includes a heavy cranked tiebeam (the arch braces have been removed) and a cross-quadrate crownpost with four solid plank braces. The hall shows moderate smoke blackening and has widely spaced studwork. Notably, the lower bay of the hall is unusually short and contains a damaged rear cross entry doorway with a 4-centred head, as well as evidence of a doorway leading into the parlour.

In around 1570, a chimney with a lintelled fireplace was added in the cross-entry, and a first floor with well-crafted chamfered joists was inserted into the hall. A 4-centred arched doorway near the hall fireplace dates from this phase. There is a blocked late 17th century window in the former end wall on the left, along with evidence of an original diamond mullioned window on the right. Both ends of the farmhouse originally had half-hipped roofs. The building has seen extensions added to the left and rear during the 19th and 20th centuries.
