Description

The Poplars is a house dating from around 1570, featuring a three-cell plan and comprising one storey with attics. It has a timber-framed structure with plastering and a thatched roof, which includes gabled dormers covered in plain tiles and fitted with small-pane casements. The building has an axial chimney from the 16th century made of narrow buff/pink brick, with the shaft rebuilt in 18th-century red brick. There is also an external gable chimney from the 17th century on the left side.

The house showcases two well-preserved late 18th-century or early 19th-century cross-casements, which have Gothick cast-iron traceried lights above the transoms. A corner porch, added in the 19th or 20th century, features a lean-to slated roof and a panelled door. Additionally, there is an early 20th-century lean-to extension made of pantiles on the front right.

Inside, the building retains much of its original 16th-century framing, including unmoulded framing, chamfered floor joists, and a lintelled open fireplace in the hall. The structure has arch windbraced studding and several diamond-mullioned windows. The upper floors in the parlour and service cells were renewed in the 17th or 18th century, with a large reused moulded bridging beam featuring 15th-century casement mouldings located in the service cell. The roof is supported by side purlins.
