Description

Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with alterations made around 1600 and later. It features a three-cell open-hall design and stands two storeys high. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof that has a central axial chimney made of red brick. The windows are primarily mid-20th century casements with leaded lights, and there is a 20th-century gabled thatched entrance porch with a boarded door.

Inside, the hall contains a complete central open truss with a cambered tie beam, and the arch-braces originate from wall shafts. A large cross-quadrate crown-post is supported by four-way arch-braces, and there is significant smoke-blackening present. The close-studwork throughout is well-preserved. There are two cross-passage doorways featuring 4-centred arched heads. The parlour chamber includes a large complete diamond-mullioned window, although the formerly hipped roof at this end was rebuilt in the 17th century.

An upper floor with chamfered joists was added to the hall around 1600, along with a fireplace that has a wide cambered lintel built against the parlour partition. A second flue was added for the parlour in the 18th century. Additionally, a rear wing was constructed at the service end in the 18th century, and another was added behind the parlour end in the mid-20th century.
