Description
Walnut Tree Cottage is a house dating from the 15th or early 16th century, and it is a well-preserved example of a three-cell open-hall house. The building has one storey and attics, with a timber-framed and plastered structure. It features a thatched roof, which is hipped at the left-hand (service) end. There is a central axial chimney made of red brick that was altered around 1800. The cottage includes eyebrow casement dormers and mid-20th century small-pane casements, along with a thatched gabled entrance porch that has a boarded door.
Inside, the two-bay open hall has a central truss with an arch-braced cambered tie-beam. Above this, there is an octagonal crownpost that originally had four-way arch-braces, which were not morticed but instead spiked to the post with nails. The studwork at the closed trusses is widely spaced, and above the tie-beam level, the studding lacks infill, allowing heated air and smoke to pass into the upper rooms at either end. The arch-braced studwork includes blocked mullioned windows, some featuring square and others diamond mullions. An upper floor was added to the hall in the late 16th or early 17th century, along with a chimney placed against the cross-passage. There is also evidence of service-room doorways and a parlour doorway.
