Description

Grove Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century, with an early 16th century core and remodelling from the early 19th century. It has two storeys and a three-cell plan. The building is timber-framed, with the north side encased in early 19th century gault brick that is now painted, while the other sides are plastered. The roof is covered with concrete tiles from the 19th century. There is an axial chimney, with the shaft rebuilt in red brick during the 18th or early 19th century. The farmhouse features various 19th and 20th century casement windows, and a mid 20th century half-glazed panelled door at the lobby entrance.

Inside, the farmhouse has good timber framing that is exposed, showing at least two phases from the 16th century, and likely more work from the 17th century. The parlour block has close-studding and a roll-and-cavetto moulded mullioned window. Above this, the chamber features a four-centred arched doorway next to the chimney and an inserted early 17th century ceiling with chamfered joists laid flat. The hall and service cells have plain unchamfered first floor joists that appear to be late 16th century, but the service cell has high-quality close-studding typical of the early 16th century. There have been major alterations over the hall and service cells, suggesting that the original parlour may have been converted into a service room later on. The hall contains a good lintelled fireplace from the mid 16th century. Part of the clasped-purlin roof over the hall remains, with the eaves line having been lower in this section until the 19th century. At the west end, there is a mid 19th century parlour block made of painted gault brick, featuring a slated roof and sash windows with large panes.
