Description

FRESSINGFIELD LAXFIELD ROAD TM 27 NE 6/32 Whitepost Farmhouse - 29.7.55 -- II

Farmhouse, C16, probably in 2 phases, with late C17 addition at the parlour end forming a single long range. Timber framed and plastered with a pantiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. C16 work has 3-cell form with cross-passage entry. Various windows; to the north there are a number of mullioned windows, those on the first floor with chamfered square mullions being original. C20 plank entrance door. Internal stack; gable stack to later addition. Good interior with fully exposed frame: some fine close studding, notably in the parlour; reversed bracing. Chamfered joists to hall and parlour, heavier plain joists at service end. Several arched doorheads, including the original cross-passage entrance in the north wall (within a C19 lean-to addition). Some oak panelling has been re-used as partitioning on the first floor. At the later end a pine cupboard with semi-domed head. The original first floor stairs have been replaced by a straight flight of mid C20 date. The roof over the parlour end-differs in having butt as well as clasped purlins and a different form of wind bracing.
