Description

Whitepost Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, likely built in two phases, with a late 17th century addition at the parlour end, creating a single long structure. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic. The 16th century section features a three-cell layout with a cross-passage entry. There are various windows, including several mullioned windows on the north side, with the original first-floor windows having chamfered square mullions. The entrance door is a 20th century plank door. Inside, there is a good interior with a fully exposed frame, showcasing fine close studding, particularly in the parlour, along with reversed bracing. The hall and parlour have chamfered joists, while the service end has heavier plain joists. Several arched doorheads are present, including the original cross-passage entrance located in the north wall, which is within a 19th century lean-to addition. Some oak panelling has been reused as partitioning on the first floor. At the later end, there is a pine cupboard with a semi-domed head. The original first-floor stairs have been replaced by a straight flight from the mid-20th century. The roof over the parlour end is distinct, featuring both butt and clasped purlins, as well as a different form of wind bracing.
