Description
Chapel Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid 16th century, with alterations made in the late 17th century and later. The building has two storeys and features four windows. It is constructed from timber framing and plaster, with most of the front elevation jettied at the first floor level. The roofs are covered with plaintiles. There is an axial chimney made of red brick, which has a sawtooth shaft and was rebuilt in the 17th century style in 1967, as noted on the plinth. The farmhouse includes various 19th and 20th-century casement windows and has a 19th-century gabled porch at the lobby entrance, which contains a six-panelled inner door.
Inside, the hall and parlour cells of the mid 16th-century house are located at the center and right of the building. The hall features some early 17th-century wainscotting with a frieze, and the 16th-century floor structure is believed to have moulded joists with ovolo-moulded plaster in the 17th-century style. The first storey has good unmoulded framing exposed, and the roof was rebuilt with attics in the mid 17th century. To the left, there is a cell that was formerly lower and was roofed until the 17th century as a cross-wing, which originally extended to the rear. The current rear service wing on the right was added in the mid 17th century, along with a 20th-century rear lean-to extension covered with slate.
