Description

Ufford Hall is a manor farmhouse with a likely 15th-century core and substantial alterations in the late 16th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a plain tiled roof. The house consists of a main range with short, flanking cross-wings; the parlour wing projects to the north and is attached to a stair wing. Numerous mullioned and mullion-and-transom windows, a mix of original and early 20th-century replacements with diamond-leaded glass, are present. Some 18th-century casement windows are also incorporated. A 20th-century doorway with an arched head and plank entrance door is on the north side. Above its earlier position is a plaster spread eagle or phoenix, also likely of 20th-century origin. A massive square axial stack sits between the hall and parlour wings. A 17th-century external stack with a tall shaft is situated against the south wall of the hall range. The hall range incorporates a medieval core which has been raised approximately 1.3 metres. The hall contains an inserted cross-beamed ceiling with ornate stop-chamfers to the joists and cornice. The parlour has a cross-beamed ceiling with ovolo moulding, stylized Fleur-de-lys stops and panelled soffits. The parlour chamber and two hall chambers have similar ceilings. Significant lengths of good exposed studding are visible. A fine, late 16th-century dog-leg staircase features turned balusters, newel posts with ball finials. Back-to-back stuccoed fireplaces are present on both floors. The hall was the birthplace and later home of Archbishop Sancroft (1617-1693). Remains of a medieval moat are present.
