Description

Lime Tree Farmhouse is a farmhouse consisting of two sections. The west section is an early 16th century hall range with a one-bay addition, possibly from the 17th century, at the service end. The east section is a parlour block added around 1600. The building is timber framed and plastered, featuring glazed black pantiles on the hall range and plain tiles on the parlour addition. It stands two storeys high with an attic. The windows are small-paned casements from the 18th and 19th centuries, and there is a 16th-century window with cavetto mullions in the hall range. The entrance has a 19th-century six-panel door, with the upper two panels glazed.

At the junction with the earlier range, the parlour block has an oblong stack that features a recessed panel with an upper sawtooth brick course and moulded work above. The gable end of the hall range includes a canted ground floor bay added around 1900. Inside, the hall has a moulded bridging beam with run-out stops, arched-braced to the wall posts, and heavy joists, also with run-out stops. There is a moulded and embattled girding beam set into the stack, and the fireplace lintel has similar decoration, although it is now damaged. The first floor shows exposed studding with evidence of original windows. The roof is a plain crown-post design, though most of the collar purlin has been removed. The parlour contains typical features from around 1600, including reversed bracing and an ovolo-moulded bridging beam on the ground floor. The newel stairs to the first floor were removed in the mid-20th century. Additionally, there are remains of a medieval moat surrounding the property.
