Description

LAXFIELD TM 27 SE

4/21 The Old White Horse -

-- II

House, latterly a public house. C16 parlour cell, the remainder probably early C17, almost certainly replacing a medieval range. Timber framed and plastered with a thatched roof. 2 storeys and attic. 3-cell form. Windows mainly mid C20 small-paned casements; 2 diamond-mullioned windows, one of them altered. Small single-storey addition set forward, with mid C20 door and open porch adjacent. Internal stack; smaller stacks at each gable end. Internally a considerable amount of the structure is exposed. The hall and parlour have chamfered joists; in the parlour is part of an original window with cavetto mullions. The hall fireplace has a fine moulded and embattled lintol, the surrounding brickwork rebuilt mid C20. At the service end some heavy re-used joists, probably medieval. Parlour range has queen-post roof; later range has a single row of clasped purlins. The C18 or early C19 corner bar is still in place. A tie beam has been painted with the words 'CHEESE ROOM'.
