Description

Gatehouse Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with a small core from the 14th century. It was extended to the left around 1971. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. It has two storeys and an attic, arranged in a three-cell form. The farmhouse features various casement windows, mainly from the 18th century, with 20th-century diamond-leaded glass, and includes one mid-20th-century dormer. The internal stack was rebuilt in the mid-20th century, featuring two shafts set diamondwise, along with two mid-20th-century doors at the rear.

Inside, much of the good quality structure is exposed. The two-bay hall has heavy plain joists and solid arched braces between the wall posts and bridging beam, although one brace is missing. A stack was inserted into the upper bay of the hall around 1700, replacing a smaller smoke bay also located in the upper end of the hall. There is one remaining 4-centre arched service doorway. The parlour has plain joists, with one half of the ceiling raised. In the rear wall of the parlour, next to the gable end, there is a blocked 14th-century doorway with a two-centre arched head, still in its original position. The gable end wall is also from the 14th century, though the studding is lost, and there is evidence of a ground floor window with heavy square mullions. The doorway likely led into another wing or possibly a stair tower. The hall chamber features an open truss with an arched-braced tie beam and a queen-post roof, which was originally half-hipped. The roof was partly renewed after a fire in 1971.
