Description
Studholme Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with a 15th-century service end on the right. It is timber framed, and the long walls are covered in 19th-century red brick. The roof, added in the mid-20th century, is made of concrete pantiles and is half-hipped over the service end. The building has two storeys and an attic. The 16th-century section features a two-cell lobby entrance form, with mid-20th-century small-paned casement windows set under segmental arches. There is a gabled brick porch with a mid-20th-century door.
Inside, there is an internal stack with recessed panels on the front and rear, although the upper part of the shaft has been rebuilt in a plain style. The 15th-century section serves as the service end of the previous house, showcasing some good first-floor framing with reversed bracing, an intact diamond-mullioned window on the ground floor, and evidence of other windows. The original sooted roof still has its ridge piece. Much of the 16th-century work is concealed, but one ground floor ceiling features chamfered joists, and there is a notable six-light window with cavetto mullions in the chamber above. The original newel stairs are arranged in two flights. The queen-post roof over the right-hand cell of the 16th-century range incorporates many components from the roof of the medieval hall, which was of the same type. This farmhouse is a good example of the 16th-century rebuilding typical of the area, retaining one end of the medieval house unaltered.
