Description

Malthouse Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, built in two phases with 19th-century additions. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a pantiled roof. To the right is a 19th-century wing made of white brick and featuring a glazed black pantiled roof. The main block, which is two storeys with an attic, appears to be part of an early 17th-century three-cell house. The parlour end was replaced in the later 17th century by the current one-and-a-half-storey addition. The house has 20th-century casement windows with horizontal glazing bars and two mid-20th-century doors. An axial stack is located against the left gable end of the main block.

Inside, much of the frame is covered with wallpaper. The right gable end retains the remains of a large attic window with square mullions. There is an ovolo-moulded axial bridging beam in the hall, and above it in the chamber is a similarly-moulded bridging beam and a complete cornice. The service end features plain square joists. In the front part of the service cell, there is a late 17th-century newel stair that extends in two flights to the attic. The roof trusses are supported by cruck-like members that spring from low tie beams, with short horizontal links on each side connecting to the top of the wallplate. There are two rows of purlins, and the structure at the later end is entirely concealed.
