Description
Chapel House is a house, likely once a farmhouse, dating from the early 17th century. A single-storey flat-roofed wing was added to the east around 1972 for the composer Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears, who owned the house for many years until Pears' death in 1976. The building is timber framed and encased in colourwashed brick, with a pantiled roof. It has two storeys and an attic, following a two-cell, lobby entry design with a central stack.
The south front features two windows with standard small-paned casements set under segmental arches. There is a small 20th-century lean-to porch with a side door, which contains a half-glazed four-panel door. The main entrance has been relocated to the north. Inside, the frame is partly exposed, showcasing reverse-curved braces and original window openings. Both ground-floor rooms have bridging beams with nicked stop-chamfers, while the joists are concealed. The staircase is a newel type, with the attic flight being original. The roof structure includes a single row of clasped purlins and cranked wind braces.
