Description
St Edmund's Farmhouse is a manor farmhouse dating from the late 14th century, with a cross-wing added in the 18th to 19th centuries on the left side. The building underwent extensive modernization in the mid-20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with a roof primarily made of glazed black pantiles. The farmhouse has two storeys and features various mid-20th century casement windows, along with a boarded entrance door from the same period. A section of the front wall has been raised above the eaves level.
The internal and gable stacks have small shafts that date to the mid-20th century. The main range includes a two-bay former open hall with a raised-aisle roof. The open truss features an arch-braced cambered tie beam that supports square or cruciform queen-posts, some of which have been cut through and removed. On the upper tie beam, there is a cruciform crown-post with broach stops and solid arched bracing to the collar purlin in a two-bay arrangement. The rafters over the hall and one gable wall remain intact, although all roof components are heavily sooted. The rest of the house has been significantly modernized, with some studding visible in the upper walls and one bay containing a 16th-century inserted ceiling. The farmhouse is located on a former moated site.
