Description

Oakhill Farmhouse is a farmhouse that may have once served as a manor house. It dates from the 15th century, with a 16th-century cross-wing on the left and mid-20th-century additions to the right. The building is timber framed, with modern render on the front and colourwashed brick on the rest. It has a plaintiled roof and is two storeys high. The windows are a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements. The first floor of the cross-wing jetties out at the front gable end, and there is a 20th-century lean-to attached to the ground floor. A notable feature is the early 17th-century plank entrance door, which has a panelled outer face and an original moulded doorframe, topped by a simple lean-to hood. The main range has internal and gable end stacks, both of which have been rebuilt. This range includes part of a former open hall with a queen-post roof, featuring tie beams with long arched braces that meet at the centre. The tie beam of the open truss is steeply cambered, and the front wall post supporting it has buttress shafts. The queen posts are cross-quadrate in section, with arched-braced cambered collars. A small section of the moulded and crenellated dais beam remains. There is an inserted ceiling with a heavy bridging beam and chamfered joists. The farmhouse is situated on a moated site.
