Description

Walsham Hall is a manor farmhouse with a core dating from the 16th century or earlier, featuring alterations from the 17th century and a later two-span wing at the rear. The building is timber framed with a red brick facade dating to around 1930, while the left gable end is made of late 17th-century brick. The rest of the house is plastered, and it has a roof covered with glazed black pantiles. The structure has two storeys and an attic, with four windows featuring 18th-century mullion and transom casements that include large 20th-century panes. There is a 19th-century four-panel door, with the upper two panels glazed, and a gabled timber trellis porch. The house has two gabled dormers and external stacks at each gable end, with the right stack being larger. A smaller external stack is located at the rear, where one original mullioned window can be seen. Inside, there is a well-preserved 17th-century dog-leg staircase leading to the first floor, complete with turned balusters and square newel posts that have elaborate finials. The right-hand end features a mid-20th-century ground floor fireplace that incorporates six moulded bricks found in the house, two of which depict swans and four with geometric designs. Several original doors remain, including one from the 18th century with raised and fielded panels. The roof structure includes clasped and butt purlins with arched wind-bracing. In 1674, Walsham Hall had 16 hearths, indicating that the current house likely represents a consolidation of a larger dwelling.
