Description
Broadway Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with alterations from the 17th century, likely completed in two main phases. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a roof of concrete plain tiles. It features a two-cell right-hand range with a slightly lower in-line section to the left, and at the junction of these two sections, there is a further gabled wing. The farmhouse is one and a half storeys high and has mid-20th century standard single-paned casement windows. On the right side, there are two low flat-roofed mid-20th century dormers. An internal stack is located at the junction of the two main sections, while the gable end of the forward wing shows the cut-down remains of an external stack. There are 20th-century doors in the gable ends on both the left and right, with the left door featuring a timber trellis porch.
Inside, the farmhouse has been considerably modernised, particularly on the upper floor where most of the timbers are concealed, except for those in the rear wall. The two bays to the right of the stack have widely spaced full-height studding and exposed joists set flat on the ground floor, with a cross-partition between the bays removed. The two bays to the left of the stack also have widely spaced full-height studs, with the wallplate set lower. An inserted upper floor features ogee-moulded square joists, which may date from the late 17th century. A newel stair is present, and while the roof has not been examined, it is thought to be largely intact.
