Description

Suddon Hall is a manor farmhouse with a late 16th-century core, substantially rebuilt in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The house is timber framed and plastered, with the front ground floor cased in colourwashed brick. The roof is plaintiled to the front and pantiled to the rear. It is two storeys and has an attic, with four windows featuring mid-20th century 3-light casements lacking glazing bars, plus one older window to the right. A central doorway has a 19th-century 6-panel door, the upper four panels glazed. There are two gabled dormers with wide bargeboards. Heavy external stacks are set against each gable end; the left-hand stack is built out the full width of the house and has a roof at the same pitch as the main slope but at a lower level, with the rear roof section continuous with that of a lean-to addition.

The interior is Victorianized, with limited original structural features visible on the ground floor. The house retains a four-bay timber frame, with the right bay partitioned off on both floors. There are chamfered ground floor bridging beams, and one rear wallpost with a corbelled head. An open fireplace is present with its original lintol. The upper floor has much plain primary-braced studding of small section, along with some re-used timbers. The attic floor is set below wallplate level. The roof incorporates a lower row of heavy stepped diminished butt purlins, with the upper row likely similar but not visible. There are some long, straight wind-braces, and the roof timbers are regular and well-finished.
