Description

Pear Tree Farmhouse is a former farmhouse with a core dating back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 17th centuries. A wing was added to the north around 1985. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in synthetic slates. It has a three-cell layout and is one and a half storeys tall. The windows are mid-20th century casements, and the cross-entry features a mid-20th century gabled porch with a boarded and battened door. There are three flat-roofed dormers with standard small-paned windows and an internal stack with a rendered shaft.

Inside, the farmhouse has been modernised, but some full-height studding is exposed, mainly in the front wall. A pair of wall posts show blocked mortices for braces that would have supported the central truss over an open hall. There is evidence of a hall window, and a stack has been inserted at the upper end of the hall, possibly replacing a timber flue. The inserted hall ceiling features a heavy chamfered bridging beam, likely from the 16th century, which does not rest on the wall posts. The joists are concealed, and there are heavy plain square joists in the parlour, which have been trimmed for a stair trap. The square-headed service doorways date from the late 16th to early 17th century, and the roof is a post-medieval replacement, probably from the 17th century.
