Description
Potash Farmhouse is a farmhouse with a 15th-century core and significant alterations from the 17th century. It is timber framed and roughcast rendered, with a thatched roof. The house is one-and-a-half storeys high and originally comprised three cells, representing a former open hall house plan. It has three windows, featuring mid-20th century small-paned metal casements, and a mid-20th century plank door. Three gabled dormers have been added. An internal stack is visible as a short, rendered shaft, and an external stack is located at the left gable end. The structure retains widely-spaced medieval studding. The truss originally spanning the open hall is now incorporated into a partition wall; evidence suggests the presence of tie beam braces and queen-posts, which have since been removed. An inserted floor has flat-chamfered joists. The parlour ceiling, dating to the first half of the 17th century, features storey posts with shaped heads and ogee stop-chamfered sides, as well as chamfered, square-section joists. The service end of the house has undergone considerable alteration, including the removal of the cross-partition from the hall, and features a later floor structure.
