Description

Shoe Devil Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the late 16th century to the early 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a thatched roof. The building features a main range that is partly one and a half storeys and partly two storeys, along with a cross-wing that has two storeys and attics.

Inside, there is an internal chimney stack in the higher section of the main range, next to the cross-wing, which has four attached hexagonal shafts on a rectangular base. This chimney bears a spurious 17th-century date added by the current owner. The farmhouse has various casement windows, including a large gabled dormer in the main range that features a four-light casement window supported by small brackets.

The former lobby entrance doorway next to the stack and another doorway on the front have both been blocked. Inside, plain timbering is exposed, and the principal room in the main range is divided into two irregular bays, with an off-centre main beam, suggesting it was likely extended when the higher section and cross-wing were added. The cross-wing consists of two bays, with exposed studding and a ceiling in the ground floor room that features a chamfered main beam, curved tops with grooves, and joists with lamb's tongue stops, along with a deep middle rail. The upper floor has cranked braces and an original upper ceiling. A newel stair beside the chimney stack leads up to the attic. The roof is structured in three bays, with one row of clasped and one row of unstepped butt purlins, along with windbraces. A lean-to at the rear contains the current entrance door.
