Description
Brook House is a former farmhouse located on Brook Lane in Ilketshall St. Margaret. It dates from the late 16th century and 18th century and has a T-shaped form with two storeys. The main range is timber-framed and rendered, with some traces of timber lining, and it has a slate roof. The pitch of the roof was lowered around 1900. There is an internal chimney stack featuring a large plain shaft made of light-coloured brick.
The principal garden front has a three-window range, which includes some sashes in flush frames with two vertical bars to the lights, as well as some old three-light casements with transoms. One of the upper floor windows has square-leaded panes of old glass. The entrance features a 20th-century replacement eight-panel door leading to an enclosed porch with a flat, lead-covered roof.
Inside, the house is arranged in six bays with a chimney bay and a three-cell plan, although most of the timbers are concealed. There is a newel stair by the stack. On the south-east side of the stack, both the ground floor and upper room have ovolo-moulded main beams with curved stepped stops. To the north-west of the stack, the three bays were originally divided into a one-bay heated room and an adjoining two-bay unheated service area. The main beam in this area has a very large chamfer. One of the upper fireplaces features a fine early 19th-century duck's nest grate.
The 18th-century range, which includes additional service rooms, is constructed of colour-washed brick with black glazed pantiles and has its own internal chimney stack. It features various three-light casement windows, one of which has square leaded panes. The main beams in this section are deep and narrow, and the joists are almost square in section and set on edge. The house is situated on a large complete moated site.
