Description

White House Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse situated on the High Street in Ilketshall St. Margaret. The building originally comprised two rooms, with two storeys and attic space. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a 20th-century tile roof. A distinctive feature is the internal chimney stack with four diagonally-set shafts on a square base, built from a mixture of red and yellow bricks. The upper storey has two original four-light casement windows with transoms, while the ground floor contains two 20th-century three-light casement windows, replacing older windows in a similar style. The central entrance has a four-panel door with panelled pilasters, an entablature with console brackets, and a simple design. Exposed main beams remain on the ground floor. The interior includes two open fireplaces, one with a rounded hearth and plain timber lintel, and another with an early 19th-century cast iron hob grate. Original upper ceilings are visible, showing cambered tie-beams and joists with chamfer and run-out stops. Blocked original windows are present, along with reversed braces at the corners. An original ladder stair leads to the attic. The roof structure retains full principal rafters cut away for clasped side purlins and a lower row of unstepped butt purlins, along with cranked windbraces. A 1½-storey lean-to addition to the rear, with colour-washed brick, contains ceilings made of reused timber and has resulted in some rearrangement of the layout within the main house.
