Description
Silverdale is a cottage dating from the 16th century, consisting of two closely-dated sections. It stands two storeys high and features a timber frame with pebbledash render and a clay pantile roof. The cottage has an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. Each floor has two 2-light standard windows, which were installed in 1985 to replace the original 3-light casement windows.
The building has a two-cell lobby entrance layout, but the bay to the north of the stack is older and showcases queen-post trusses with very thin arched braces. On the upper floor at the north end, there are two blocked original 5-light windows with diamond mullions. The ground floor features wide, plain joists and a chamfered main beam with pyramid stops. The chimney bay contains trusses with long arched braces, and above the lobby on the upper floor, there is a blocked 3-light window with diamond mullions. To the south of the stack, only the main beam is exposed, which has a chamfer and broach stops.
The roof over this section consists of two long bays, with full principal rafters that have a groove cut away for the insertion of clasped purlins, straight collars, and cranked windbraces. There is a 19th-century extension on the north side, which is now separately occupied and is not included in the listing.
