Description
Kings Fene is a farmhouse dating to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. It has a roughly L-shaped layout and originally comprised timber framing, though much of the exterior has been rendered with brick facing. The roof is covered in black glazed pantiles, and a brick gable end on the east features a high, corbelled coping and a chimney stack. An internal stack with a plain red brick shaft is also present in the main range.
Most of the windows are 20th-century replacements, including four 3-light casements to the upper floor, two 3-light and one 4-light mullion-and-transom windows on the ground floor, all set in shallow reveals. The rear wing, also with 20th-century ovolo-moulded 3-light casement windows, appears to have been shortened and is now arranged in three bays. A 20th-century porch sits in the angle between the two wings.
Internally, some original timber framing remains. The main range appears to be comprised of two sections built close together. A ground floor room on the west has a chamfered main beam and joists, an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel, and main posts with long jowls. A section of the rear wall has been removed, and a lean-to addition now contains a straight flight of stairs. In the rear wing, trusses feature cambered tie-beams and long arched braces have been removed. Roof access is not possible. The house stands on a moated site.
