Description
The Huntsman and Hounds is a mid-16th century inn, situated sideways to the street. It possesses a basic two-cell internal chimney plan and is constructed with a timber frame now rendered, topped by a clay pantiled roof. The prominent internal chimney stack features attached hexagonal shafts rising from a square, moulded base, with a recessed blank panel along the top adorned with brick modillions. A cove cornice runs around the building. The windows are old casements, some with two lights and others with three, all featuring transoms and horizontal bars. A plank door is located at each end of the front elevation.
The interior is of particular note. Both ground floor rooms display main beams with multiple roll-mouldings and run-off stops. One bay in the room to the west of the stack reveals exposed joists with a double roll-moulding and run-off stops. Each room contains an unusual arched fireplace lintel with multiple roll-mouldings; the western fireplace incorporates carved Tudor roses at the springings of the arch and centrally within the lintel. The inn was listed as such in White's Directory of Suffolk from 1844.
