Description

Grove Farmhouse is a farmhouse with a core dating back to the 16th century, largely encased in early 19th century colour-washed brick. The roof is covered with black glazed pantiles, and features corbelled gables. Two internal chimney stacks are present, with plain square shafts made of white brick. The property is two storeys high, formerly with attics to the main section, and three storeys to a wing set back at a right angle to the front. Windows are early 19th century mullion-and-transome type, with two and three lights, set in deep reveals with segmental arched heads on each floor. A lobby entrance is situated against a chimney stack, leading to a two-storey porch which slightly projects from the front. The porch has a flat roof and moulded cornice, and the recessed entrance door has six flush panels, a surround with half-round pilasters, a plain architrave, and a flat pediment. The main section of the farmhouse comprises three cells; much of the timber frame is concealed, however, one main beam retains a wide chamfer and stepped stops. A newel staircase is positioned against an internal chimney stack. A three-bay wing was added as a service range. The remains of a moat surround the property.
