Description

Corner Farm Cottage is a house that dates back to the 15th century and was previously divided into two separate dwellings. It has two storeys and a three-cell plan, originally featuring a two-bay open hall. The building is timber-framed and encased in mid-19th century red brick, with a flint and brick lean-to at each end, and is topped with clay pantiles. Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft.

The cottage has three 3-light 20th-century casement windows on each floor, with transoms on the ground floor, and two plank doors. The partition at the lower end of the hall remains intact, featuring two fine pointed service doorways with continuous moulding, each cut from a single piece of timber. The service rooms are still divided into two sections.

The open truss of the hall shows signs of smoke-blackening and includes a cambered tie-beam and long arched braces, all adorned with hollow chamfer moulding. The moulded base of the crown-post is visible just below the current upper ceiling level, though the rest of the roof is not accessible. An inserted stack was placed over the original open hearth, dividing the hall into two sections. This stack has two back-to-back hearths, each with open fireplaces and plain timber lintels.

The upper bay of the hall and the original storied upper end were combined to create a large 16th-century parlour, which features a fine inserted ceiling with ovolo-moulded joists and a main beam that has a complex shallow moulding on its soffit.
