Description
Gate Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century. It has two storeys and is constructed with a timber frame that is rendered, topped with a thatched roof. The building features one internal chimney stack and one end chimney stack, both made of plain red brick. There is a 19th-century brick wing that has a dentil cornice. The windows are old casements, with two-light and three-light designs, and there is a plank door.
Inside, the timbers are exposed, with a frame consisting of four bays, including a chimney bay; the end bay on the south side may be an addition. The structure includes full height studs, cranked reversed braces, and main beams that have chamfers and curved stops. There is one open fireplace with a plain timber lintel. On the upper floor at the front, there is a blocked original four-light window that features hollow-chamfer moulding on the mullions. The ceilings on the upper floor have joists set flat and are a later addition; the roof space is not accessible. The farmstead was previously known as Gatehouse Farm.
