Description

The building comprises two cottages, dating to the 16th and early 17th centuries. Originally a single house, it is partly one-and-a-half storeys and partly two storeys with an attic, and is timber-framed with a rendered exterior and a thatched roof. It features an internal chimney stack with a plain shaft, partly constructed of old red brick, and a later end stack on the west side. Various 3-light casement windows are present, along with a plank front door.

The western section of the building is the oldest part, appearing to have been longer originally and now extending across three-and-a-half bays. The timber frame exhibits widely-spaced studs, assembly marks on the main timbers, and edge-halved scarf joints with long halvings to each wallplate. In the middle bay, a clamp supports the ends of a set of joists that have a different texture and colour from the rest of the roof structure, suggesting a potential later insertion. The middle roof truss originally lacked a tie-beam, and the remaining tie-beams, which were formerly braced with arches, have been cut. The roof rafters have undergone considerable rearrangement. Blocked original windows are visible on the upper floor. To the east of the stack, a parlour addition was likely built in the early 17th century.
