Description
Abbey Farmhouse is a moated farmhouse located on the site of the former conventual buildings of the Benedictine Priory, which was dissolved in 1528. The current structure dates from the mid-16th century and is timber-framed with a roughcast finish and a plain tiled roof. It features a plain red brick chimney stack and simple barge-boards on the gables. The house has a basic three-cell internal layout with a chimney and cross-entry, along with a later lobby entrance, and consists of six bays across two storeys and attics. The upper storey has three windows, while the ground storey has five, all of cross form, with some early 20th-century replacements. There is a mid-19th century enclosed gabled porch with double doors.
Inside, the farmhouse showcases good, plain exposed timbering. The rooms on either side of the chimney stack have main beams with stop-chamfered and ogee stops, along with flat-set joists. The rear wall of the room south of the stack has remnants of a 5-light diamond-mullioned window, which has been replaced by a 3-light window featuring ovolo-moulded mullions and intermediate wooden bars. Both ground floor fireplaces are equipped with timber lintels. The service area remains divided into two sections, with a higher floor level and a half-cellar below, which appears to be an original feature. The main posts originally had long arched braces that have since been removed. The side-purlin roof has been significantly altered and once included dormers. The rear of the farmhouse has various lean-tos and extensions that have been modernised.
