Description

Moat Farmhouse is a farmhouse located on a moated site, dating from the late 16th century and mid 17th century. The building has two storeys and is timber-framed, encased in late 19th century red brick on the north, south, and east sides, while the west side features earlier brick facing that includes a chimney-stack. The roof is covered with black glazed double Roman tiles. The farmhouse has an L-shaped layout, consisting of a main range and a cross-wing. There is a 19th century gabled addition on the north side that fills part of the angle between the two ranges, and a 17th century extension on the south side that contains a stair. Additionally, there is a single-storey lean-to along the east side.

Inside, there is a large internal chimney-stack within the wing, with a plain red brick shaft, and the end stack on the west has two square shafts with an attached corbelled head. The windows are mostly late 19th century, including some two-light casements with a single bar to the lights and some sashes with clear glass, all featuring wedge lintels. The entrance door has six flush panels, a moulded surround, and a wedge lintel. The cross-wing currently has just over three bays and was likely four bays long before the brick facing was added, with plain ceiling-beams exposed. In the main range, there is an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel. A notable feature is the fine dog-leg stair within the south wing, which has turned balusters, newel posts, and a moulded handrail. At the foot of the stair, there is a doorway leading to an associated half-cellar, which has a square ovolo-moulded surround with multiple lamb's tongue stops and jewel and groove detailing at the foot of each jamb.
