Description

Lock and Key Cottage is a house that dates back to the 15th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 16th century. It features timber framing with renewed large panel framing and plaster infill, set on a base of red brick and sandstone, with red and blue brick on the right end. The roof is plain tiled and the building is designed as an end jettied hall house, with the roof and possibly the service area rebuilt in the mid-16th century. The cottage stands two storeys high on a plinth, with a jetty on the left return. The roof is hipped with a gablet on the left and half-hipped on the right, featuring a rebuilt stack at the centre right.

There are three wooden casements on each floor, and a plank and stud door located to the centre right, which is topped with a hipped hood. Inside, the small hall contains an inglenook fireplace with a crenellated dais beam, separated from the parlour door by a colonette and moulded capital, which is exposed on the upper floor. The parlour door features a tongue-poking head in the spandrel, and the truss includes a crown post, with the parlour roof being smoke-blackened. The roof of the hall and service wing is unblackened, featuring clasped purlins with wind braces. It is noted that the exterior framing is partly spurious and only partially related to the actual structure of the house.
