Description

Morebreddis Cottages comprise a house, now a row of cottages, dating from the early 16th century, with extensions added in the 17th and 18th centuries and alterations in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed and has weather-boarded and tile-hung elevations, with some areas of exposed timber framing and plaster infill, and a plain tiled roof. It is a Wealden hall house of four framed bays, extended by a long rear wing. The main range is two storeys and an attic, with jettied wings projecting to the left and right, supported by brackets, and eaves carried over a central recess on brackets. The roof is hipped with stacks positioned to the left and right, and has four hipped dormers. The first floor has four wooden casement windows. The ground floor has glazing bar sash windows, wooden casements, and three half-glazed doors. The right return wing is two storeys high, has a hipped roof with stacks to the right and clustered centrally to the left, and contains five wooden casement windows on each floor, alongside half-glazed doors. The left return exhibits a part-exposed sandstone basement. The original Wealden structure is substantial and was evidently a house of prominence when initially constructed.
