Description

Pear Tree Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with some older fragments. It has two storeys and is constructed of timber framing with a roughcast finish, topped with black glazed pantiles. The house features an internal chimney and a cross-entry layout, with a stack that has a plain red brick shaft rebuilt in Tudor bricks and a corbelled top. The windows are old 2-light and 3-light casements, with transoms on the ground floor. There are two doors beneath matching 19th-century gabled porch roofs. Notably, to the left of the stack, the upper window is positioned lower than the others on the upper floor; this section of the house likely had a lower original wallplate, which was raised when the rest of the house was constructed, suggesting it may be medieval, although most of the timbers have been replaced. The main part of the house consists of a 2-bay hall and two service rooms, separated by a cross-entry, and displays impressive timbering, including an enormous chamfered main beam with curved stops, chamfered and stopped joists, and damaged roll-moulding on the post-heads. One original service doorway remains, which is square-headed with chamfered jambs. Additionally, there is a 17th-century 2-bay kitchen extension located behind the cross-entry.
