Description

St. Margaret's Hall is a farmhouse that was originally divided into two separate homes, dating from the early to mid-17th century. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring a main range and a slightly later cross-wing. It is constructed with a timber frame, partly rendered and mainly faced in colour-washed brick, topped with black glazed pantiles. Both sections include internal chimney stacks with plain red brick shafts.

The main range has three 20th-century cross windows on the upper floor and two three-light mullion-and-transom windows on the ground floor, all set in shallow reveals. There are two slightly recessed doors with four flush panels, the top two of which are glazed, and rectangular fanlights; one door includes a small open porch. The cross-wing features two-light and three-light 20th-century casement windows. At the rear, there is a tall narrow stair wing that reaches the full height of the house.

Inside, most of the timberwork is covered. In the main range, there is one main beam with ovolo-moulding and complex stepped stops with jewel detailing. The upper ceilings are original, and a small section of 17th-century turned balusters can be found near the attic stair at the top of the stair wing. The roof structure includes clasped purlins, a lower row of unstepped butt purlins, straight collars, and intermediate collars between the trusses. The cross-wing has a three-cell lobby-entrance layout with five bays, including a chimney bay, and a newel stair beside the stack. Some plain framing is exposed, and the roof has one row of unstepped and one row of stepped butt purlins. Both ranges feature later saddles attached to the apex of the rafters.
