Description

Boundary Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the early 16th century and early 19th century. It has a T-shaped form and stands two storeys high. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with a single Roman tile roof on the older rear range and a slate roof on the front range. The rear range consists of two structural sections with different roof levels and features an internal chimney stack with four diagonally set attached shafts.

The farmhouse has various 19th-century casement windows, each with a single horizontal bar in the lights. Inside, two bays of the original house remain, showcasing a fine exposed ground-floor ceiling with a main beam that has multiple roll-moulding and run-off stops. One end of the room is adorned with 16th-century panelling in long panels, which is said to have come from various local sources, possibly relocated from a demolished part of the house.

On the upper floor, there is studding with cranked braces at the corners and several blocked original windows. The interior also features a fireplace with a plain timber lintel and a four-centred arched doorway with leaf carving in the spandrels. The tie beams are supported by arched braces. The roof is constructed in short bays, with one row of clasped and one row of unstepped butt purlins and windbraces.

The adjoining section of the rear range is a 19th-century replacement. The main range, aligned from southeast to northwest, has three windows on each floor, featuring three-light casements with transoms and horizontal glazing bars. There is a central entrance door with six raised fielded panels and one end chimney stack. The farm is located at the boundary of the three parishes of Ilketshall St. Margaret, St. Michael South Elmham, and Rumburgh.
