Description
Cranmer Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the early 16th century, with additions from the early 17th century and the 18th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, topped with double Roman tiles. The building features a two-storey jettied main range with a 1½-storey addition on the right and lean-to extensions at the rear.
On the left side, there is a large stepped brick chimney from the 17th century, which has four square shafts with attached heads. To the right, within the jettied range, there is another chimney with a plain rebuilt shaft set on a base of Tudor brick. The farmhouse has three 3-light standard casement windows from the mid-20th century on each floor, along with one gabled dormer that features a 3-light square leaded casement window from the 20th century. The entrance has a plank door situated within an open rustic porch.
The jettied range follows a basic two-cell end-chimney plan, with the original stack on the right heating the hall. This hall features heavy main cross-beams that have a double roll-moulding and triangle stops. There is a cross-entry, and the rear doorway has a 4-centred arched head, although it is now blocked. The partition for the service end to the left of the entry has been removed, combining the two former service rooms into one, which now includes a large open fireplace at the later end stack that blocks an original diamond-mullioned window in the gable end.
The main posts have jowled heads, and the arched braces have been removed. The roof structure includes clasped side purlins and a central queen-post truss above the hall. The 17th-century addition on the right extends into a small rear wing and consists of three bays, with some good close studding exposed and a blocked fireplace on the side wall. The joists in the front bay are set on edge, while the remaining joists are set flat, wide, and unchamfered, which presents a curious discrepancy, as the range appears to be of one date.
