Description
This townhouse, dating from the late 15th century, was originally divided into tenements for the parish poor. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, with comb pargetting and a pantile roof. The building has one storey and attics, following a basic three-cell plan. There are one internal and two end chimney-stacks, all with rebuilt red brick shafts.
The exterior includes two gabled dormers with plain bargeboards and two-light single bar casement windows. The ground floor has three windows, each different: two are two-light casements and one is a three-light casement, with one window featuring a transom and pintle hinges. The entrance door is plain and located in the original cross-entry position, with a corresponding door at the rear. To the right, there is a small single-storey extension made from matching materials.
The frame consists of four bays and was formerly part of a two-bay open hall. An internal chimney-stack has been inserted into the lower bay, adjacent to the open truss, which has a cambered tie-beam and arched braces. The rear wallplate shows diamond-mullion housings for a five-light hall window. The main beam of the ceiling in the hall is chamfered with step stops, and the similarly treated joists are set flat. There is a large plain timber lintel above the single hearth. The framing is mostly plain, with some replacements, including an edge-halved and bladed scarf joint in one wallplate. The rafters are all covered, and there is no evidence of any roof structure other than a rafter roof.
