Description

West Cottage is a house dating from the late 15th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, featuring panels of guilloche pargetting and a thatched roof with a decorated ridge. The building has 1½ storeys and a basic three-cell plan, which originally included a central open hall. A 16th-century bay was added on the left side.

Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft, and a later stack has been added to the left gable. The exterior includes two gabled dormers; one is wide with three-light casement windows, while the other is smaller with a two-light window. The ground floor has various old three-light casement windows, some with square leading and one with pintle hinges. There are also French doors with two leaves and small panes, along with an old plank entrance door that has a plain surround and a triangular pediment.

The basic frame of the house consists of 3½ bays. The open truss of the 1½-bay hall has been cut away, leaving only the main posts with empty mortices for long braces. The main beam of the inserted ceiling is lodged into these posts and dates from the early 17th century, featuring a wide chamfer and scroll-stops with a bar. The positions of one five-light hall window and one cross-entry doorway can still be identified. The chimney stack has been inserted into the cross-entry, backing against the service end partition, most of which has been cut away. The 16th-century bay has plain but substantial joists on the ground floor. The rough rafters on the left of the stack are likely 18th-century replacements, while those on the right are smoke-blackened.
