Description

TL 97 SE WALSHAM LE WILLOWS WEST STREET

2/85 West Cottage

GV II

House. Late C15. Timber-framed and rendered, with panels of guilloche pargetting. Thatched roof with decorated ridge. 1½ storeys; basic 3-cell plan, formerly with central open hall; a C16 bay added on left. An internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft, and a later stack added to the left gable. 2 gabled dormers, one wide, with 3-light casement windows, the other smaller, with a 2-light window. Various old 3-light casement windows to ground floor, some with square leading, one with pintle hinges. French doors with 2 leaves, small-paned. Old plank entrance door with plain surround and triangular pediment. Simple basic frame in 3½ bays: the open truss of the 1½- bay hall has been cut away, leaving only the main posts with empty mortices for long braces. The main beam of the inserted ceiling is lodged into these posts: early C17, wide chamfer and scroll-stops with bar. The position of one 5-light hall window and one cross-entry doorway are identifiable. Chimney- stack inserted into the cross-entry, backing up against the service end partition, most of which has been cut away. The C16 bay has plain but substantial joists on the ground floor. Rough rafters, probably C18 replaced, on left of stack, but smoke-blackened on right.
