Description
This is a barn located to the south of Wrenshall Farmhouse, dating from part of the early 17th century and part of the early 18th century. It is constructed from timber framing and is weatherboarded, topped with a pantiled roof. The barn features two high cart entrances at the front and two small lean-to extensions at the rear. It comprises ten bays, with the five northern bays representing the original 17th-century structure. The barn has full-height studs, with short arched braces at the corners that are halved against the outside of the studs, and long arched braces connecting to the tie-beams, which have been replaced in all but one truss by bolted knees. The roof is built in short bays with trenched clasped purlins and an irregular arrangement of windbraces. The five southern bays were added in the 18th century, featuring primary braces and bisected studs, with long arched braces still present on the trusses. The roof here has a ridge and combines clasped and butt purlins, with the principal rafters being deeper but not wider than the common rafters. Notably, the roof bays do not align with the wall bays. This section of the barn includes several reused pieces of wall-plate taken from a late medieval or early 16th-century house, which have housings and shutter-slides for diamond-mullioned windows, including two with six lights.
