Description
The stables located to the south of Wrenshall Farmhouse date back to the early 18th century. They are constructed with a timber frame and are weatherboarded, sitting on a high plinth made of red brick and black knapped flint. The roof is covered with double Roman tiles. The building consists of four bays of varying lengths, which are divided into loose boxes. It features substantial framing, including some reused timbers, long primary braces, and bisected studs. The tie-beams are morticed into the sides of the main posts well below their tops, serving as main beams for the ceiling joists and supporting the hay-loft above. The roof is structured in seven short bays, with principal rafters that are deeper but not wider than the common rafters, along with a ridge piece and clasped purlins. There is a small entrance door on the south side. This type of purpose-built stable is unusual in Suffolk.
